CyclesOpenMoonRay (XPU)MoonRay is the state-of-the-art open-source Monte Carlo Ray Tracing (MCRT) production renderer developed by DreamWorks Animation, celebrated for its lighting efficiency and photoreal scalability across animated feature films.
This project delivers a production-grade Blender addon (moonray_for_blender) inspired by the proven architecture of RenderMan for Blender (RfB). Moving beyond basic Hydra delegates, it implements a full custom RenderEngine coupled with procedural .rdla (RDL2 ASCII) scene generation and real-time execution management piping EXR buffers directly into Blender's Render Result.
At the core is full GPU acceleration with hybrid XPU execution: ray tracing intersections are accelerated on the GPU while complex shading runs on CPU (-exec_mode xpu), featuring automated and graceful fallback to vectorized CPU when required.
The architecture is cross-platform, offering native support for Apple Silicon Metal on macOS, NVIDIA CUDA with OptiX 7.6 builds on Linux, and a seamless Windows integration through a dedicated WSL2 launcher bridging paths and environments.
Progressive Live Rendering delivers real-time checkpoint EXR buffers rendered across sampling passes, enabling interactive preview and abort capability while preserving the latest buffer.
Dedicated translators handle geometry with smooth normals, realistic physical cameras, Principled BSDF to DwaBaseMaterial conversion, environment lighting on EnvLight, and photometric light translators calibrated pixel-for-pixel against Cycles.
